2.2 INVENTORY TEMPLATE
2.2.1 Six Steps to Completing the Template

This section provides a standard template and succinct guidance to companies without existing GHG emission measurement systems, and companies that prefer to use standardized templates and emissions factors for completing their GHG inventory. While the template provided within this section can be used to generate the information required for completion of the MAC reporting form (see Section 6.2), it is optional to use this template. Companies with existing GHG emission measurement and management systems can use their own systems to generate the information required by the MAC reporting form; nonetheless, they may find the guidance and resources provided here helpful.

The template, which is provided on the enclosed diskette and is also presented starting on p.18, has been designed as a “smart worksheet” in Microsoft Excel with embedded formulas that apply standardized emissions factors and conversion factors. Data entry fields are blue; the orange fields contain embedded formulas, which cannot be overridden. For those companies not using the worksheet, emission and conversion factors are presented in Part 7 below.

A GHG emissions inventory should be completed annually. Following inventory preparation, the data should be analysed to determine root causes of changes in GHG emission levels. The results of this analysis should help to inform your GHG action plan for the following period.

The worksheet has been designed to draw upon data required for other reporting requirements such as the Statistics Canada Quarterly Industrial Consumption of Energy (ICE) Survey, the Natural Resources Canada Annual Census of Mines, and where possible, provincial reporting requirements. In addition, it has been designed to be as flexible as possible, allowing the user to determine the level of detail to include, in the hope that it will be a useful tool for the full spectrum of MAC members.
